“Rubble” Paw Patrol Inspired Hat

Materials Needed 

  • 5mm hook
  • Bernat premium yarn (yellow, white, rust orange or brown, light grey, dark grey)
  • yarn needle
  • measuring tape
  • scissors

Terms Used:

• Ch = chain
• Sl.st = slip stitch
• Hdc = half double crochet
• St = stitch
• Hdc dec = half double crochet decrease
• Sc = single crochet
• Sc dec = single crochet decrease

Size: 18 months, 2-3 years, 3-10 years

Pattern:
• Magic ring, ch.1 
• Hdc x5 in magic ring, close with sl.st
Increasing Rounds:
• Ch.1, hdc x2 in each st around (10) close with sl.st
• Ch.1, hdc x2 in first st, hdc x1 in next st …. continue around, close with sl.st

• Ch.1, hdc x2 in the first st, hdc x1 in next 2 sts … continue around, close
with sl.st (20)
• Ch.1, hdc x2 in first st, hdc x1 in next 3 sts …. continue around, close with
sl.st (25)
• Ch.1, hdc x2 in first st, hdc x1 in next 4 sts …. continue around, close with
sl.st (30)
• Ch.1, hdc x2 in first st, hdc x1 in next 5 sts …. continue around, close with
sl.st (35)
• Ch.1, hdc x2 in first st, hdc x1 in next 6 sts …. continue around, close with
sl.st (40) (stop increasing here for baby size 18 months)
• Ch.1, hdc x2 in first st, hdc x1 in next 7 sts …. continue around, close with
sl.st (45) (stop increasing here for baby size 2-3 years old)
• Ch.1, hdc x2 in the first st, hdc x1 in the next 8 sts …. continue around, close
with sl.st (50)
• Ch.1, hdc x2 in the first st, hdc x1 in the next 9 sts …. continue around, close
with sl.st (55) (stop increasing here for size 3-10 years)
After Finished Increasing Rounds:
• Ch.1 & hdc in each st around, close with sl.st
• Repeat last round for a total of 4 rounds, don’t ch.1 after last round
• Fasten off and attach white yarn
• Ch.1, hdc in each st around, close with sl.st ….don’t ch.1 after last round
• Attach rust orange yarn or brown (whatever you prefer)
• Ch.1, hdc in each st around, close with sl.st
• Repeat last round 1 more time and fasten off

Ear Flaps:
• Counting from the back seam, re-attach the rust orange or brown in the 9th
st (5th for 18 month size or 7th for 2-3 years size) & ch.1, hdc in the same st
and the next 9 sts
• Ch.1 & turn work, hdc in the same 10 sts
• Ch.1 & turn
• Hdc dec, hdc in the next 6 sts, hdc dec
• Ch.1 & turn
• Hdc dec, hdc in the next 4 sts, hdc dec
• Ch.1 & turn
• Hdc dec, hdc in the next 2 sts, hdc dec
• Ch.1 & turn
• Hdc dec x2
• Sl.st in the same st & fasaten off
• Repeat these steps again for the other ear flap
• Re-attach the rust orange or brown yarn at the back seam and ch.1
• Hdc in each st all the way around, close with sl.st & fasten off
• Using a yarn needle, weave all the tail ends in and out of the stitches on the
inside of the hat
• Cut evenly long strands of yarn in each of the 3 colours, fold in half through
the end of one ear flap and braid; tie off knot at the end and repeat for the
other ear flap

Paw Badge:
• Using light grey yarn, ch.3
• Hdc in 2nd ch from hook and in the next ch. After that
• Ch.1 and turn
• Hdc x2 in each st (4) ch.1 & turn work
• Hdc x2 in 1st st, hdc x1 in following 2sts, hdc x2 in last st (6) ch.1 and turn
work
• Hdc x1 in each st, ch.1 and turn work
• Repeat last row
• Hdc x2 in each st (12) ch.1 and turn work
• Sc dec x2, dc in the next 4 sts, sc dec x2
• Fasten off
• Using a darker grey; magic ring & ch.2, sc x5, close magic ring & ch.1
• Sc x2 in each st around (10) close with sl.st and fasten off
• { using a darker grey; magic ring & ch.2, sc x5, close magic ring with sl.st and
fasten off }
• Repeat { to } 2 more times
• Using a yarn needle, attach in the form of a paw on the badge
• Re-attach the dark grey yarn in the bottom corner of the badge and sc all
the way aorund, close with sl.st and fasen off
• Using yarn needle, sew onto the front of the hat

Ears:
• Using rust orange or brown yarn, ch.8
• Hdc in 2nd ch from hook and the following 5 chains, hdc x2 in last ch
• Rotate work clockwise and hdc back down the other side of the chain (6)
• Ch.1 and turn hdc x1 in the first 6 sts, hdc x2 in the following 2sts, hdc in
the next 6 sts, ch.1 and turn
• Hdc x1 in the first 7 sts, hdc x2 in the next 2, hdc x1 in the following 7 sts,
ch.1 & turn
• Hdc x1 in the first 8 sts, hdc x2 in the next 2 sts, hdc x1 in the following 8
sts,
• Ch.1, hdc evenly across the straight edge (12) ch.1 and turn
• Hdc dec x2, hdc x1 in the next 4 sts, hdc dec x2, ch.1 & turn
• Sc.dec x4
• Ch.1 & turn
• Hdc x1 in each of the 4 sts
• Close with sl.st in the same st as the last hdc and fasten off with long tail
• Repeat steps again for the other ear with white yarn
• Use a yarn needle to attach to hat
