How To Soften Yarn

2 Different Ways To Soften Your Yarnsoft yarn, scratchy yarn, soften your scratchy yarn, how to soften your yarn,

“aaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhh” …. those are the singing angels I heard in my head when I found these 2 ways to soften yarn!!  I am always frustrated when purchasing yarn because, lets all just be completely honest here, there are SO MANY lovely and super soft yarn options but they can be incredibly costly.  I personally love the color options available and the low cost bulk options of Red Heart yarn but I hate how scratchy it can be.  Now that I have this information it’s a game changer!!  I feel like my options have been blown wide open and I am loving every second of it.  Clearly, I just had to come on here and share these tips with my fellow crocheters.  There are 2 different methods listed below; one way is how you can do it when you have already finished your project and the other way is if you’re wanting to soften the yarn before you even use it!!

(OPTION 1 of 2) HOW TO SOFTEN YARN FOR A FINISHED PROJECT:

  • soak cover project with cold water (in sink or tub or even a bucket depending on the size of your project) & add 1/4 cup of vinegar
  • leave soaking for 20 minutes
  • rinse out twice:  drain the water, cover the project with water again, drain it & repeat one more time to rinse thoroughly
  • place project in washing machine on lowest setting available (place in a pillowcase or lingerie bag if you’re worried about it coming apart from being tossed around too much) use a full load worth of fabric softener
  • place in dryer with dryer sheet and let it almost completely dry
  • remove when it’s a little bit damp and lay flat to dry
    • if it’s still not as soft as you would like it, just go ahead and repeat these steps BUT instead of having it soak in cold water and vinegar, have it soak in pure fabric softener.  Just completely submerge the project in fabric softener for 10 min and then go through the steps noted above from rinsing onward

(OPTION 2 of 2) HOW TO SOFTEN YARN BEFORE USING IT TO BEGIN YOUR PROJECT:

  • remove the label from your yarn skein but do not unravel any part of the skein
  • gently loosen the yarn without unraveling it; you can just use your fingers by opening your hands widely, separating your fingers and pushing them into the yarn skein kind of how you would when shampooing your hair and very gently stretch to loosen
  • place your yarn in a lingerie bag or a pillowcase and wash in cold water with fabric softener
  • place in dryer with dryer sheet and allow to dry fully
